Mobile strategy - leveraging the IoT

Always evaluate what your mobile devices can communicate with

IoT Driving tomorrow

IoT definitions often include “Internet” as in the W3 web via http(s). However, as as we look at various IoT network architectures with expanding HW capabilities - other means of D2D communications can be considered. Additionally, as IoT penetrates further into our lives, the platform specifics of devices will expand to use common protocols to allow developers to communicate with IoT devices as easily at they current interact with REST & GraphQL APIs.

The need for common IoT protocols is the key, just as HTTP(s) is/was for the success of what we consider the internet today. There are organizations and groups actively working on this and the fruits of their labors is coming to fruition. As we saw in the latest WWDC and G I/O - Matter is making its way to common support allowing smart home users to integrate home IoT regardless of brand. This is a huge - and very welcome change from years past.

Common IoT protocols are just the latest for smart homes, but there are other IoT infrastructures leveraging cutting edge tech such as blockchain and dApps for fully realize our move to an IoT and inter connected world.

Play IoT Today - or Play catchup tomorrow

As we look around globally what is happening in the IoT space, we will quickly realized just how fast IoT is maturing into real solutions that we very much desire in today’s technical world. We have gone from smart grids, to smart cities, to now smart nations such as Singapore’s IoT initiative.

Regardless, if you’re not taking IoT into consideration now, you very well may be doing real damage to your organization’s mobile future - and our future will be mobile. Some of the major industries working to bring IoT into our daily lives:

  • Health care and Tele-health
  • Smart Grids and Cities
  • Utilities utilizing blockchain to optimize reallocation of resources and consumer savings
  • Supply chain management
  • Decentralized IoT devices to allow multiple eco-systems to leverage a device’s capabilities

IoT Strategy

IoT leverages a series of devices which coordinate actions or leverage realtime sensor data from several devices. IoT is the evolution of our mobile eco-system and is the culmination of 5G networks, powerful edge computing devices, and consumer acceptance of machine-to-machine communications. As our IoT environments continue to expand, taking into consideration how your mobile solution will fit in to a larger IoT environment will play an ever increasing factor in your organization’s mobile strategy.

The power of IoT

Leveraging the computing capabilities available at the edge combined with secure and well defined IoT protocols is providing us the opportunity to begin and realize mobile’s full potential. Whether it’s ML Processing at the edge based on real-time local sensor inputs, interconnected and coordinated computing on a micro level, or extending the power and feature functionality beyond the single device. With organizations now collaborating on standard communications and allowing single devices to work across providers - IoT is poised better than ever before to truly transform our world and how we interact and engage within it.
